The Sierra will offer GM’s first ever cargo box with integrated carbon fiber. Called the CarbonPro, it replaces the steel inner panels and floor with a carbon-fiber composite that GMC says better protects against dents, scratches, and corrosion. The CarbonPro also will be 62 pounds lighter than the standard steel box, although GMC did not release any information on payload capacity. The CarbonPro option won’t be available at launch but will roll out at some point during the model year.
As for the standard steel bed, GMC says it has been altered to be 50 percent stronger than the outgoing model’s. At 63 cubic feet, the short box is 10 cubes larger than the previous unit, and it adds extra tie-down points and a newly available 110-volt outlet.
Both the SLT and Denali trim Sierras will have what GMC calls its MultiPro tailgate. This is essentially a mini tailgate within the larger gate that can be manipulated independent of the main piece. With six different functions and positions, the MultiPro can be turned into a standing workstation, a set of steps (with an assist handle), or various load stops. Two new buttons on the tailgate handle also make for easier tailgate release from inside, and the full tailgate can be opened remotely via the key fob.
Ram has had success with its turbocharged V-6 EcoDiesel 1500, and Ford just gave the 2018 F-150 a turbocharged V-6 diesel for the first time. The new Silverado and now the Sierra are following suit with a new turbo-diesel 3.0-liter inline-six. (The Sierra HD and the mid-size Canyon already offer Duramax turbo-diesels, a V-8 in the former and a four-cylinder in the latter.) GMC isn’t ready to release power and fuel-economy stats for the new engine, but it will be paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission.
Nor is GMC ready to talk about the naturally aspirated 4.3-liter gasoline V-6 that powers base trucks; this initial reveal only discussed the SLT and Denali trims. Revised versions of the 5.3-liter and 6.2-liter V-8s will remain the gasoline-engine choices for those models. Both will feature stop/start technology as well as a new Dynamic Fuel Management system that GMC says allows the engines to operate on as few as one of the eight cylinders.
Further easing towing and trailering tasks are Hitch Guidance with Hitch View, an Auto Electric parking brake, and trailer theft detection, which sends alerts when the trailer is tampered with. Additional features include a multicolor head-up display, an improved infotainment interface (the Denali trim comes standard with an 8.0-inch navigation-equipped screen), and a rearview-camera mirror with zoom and tilt functionality. Safety features such as blind-spot monitoring, pedestrian detection, and low-speed automated emergency braking are available as well.
The 2019 GMC Sierra will reach dealerships this fall. Look for more details about lower-level trims, powertrain specs, and fuel-economy figures in the near future.
